Mexico City Vegan Food Tour

Tortas, Tacos, Churros & More

With more than 9 million residents, Mexico City is the most famous and populated city in North America. The city is known for beautiful parks, historical buildings, markets, restaurants and now vegan food! Join me as I tell you all about some must-try iconic vegan Mexican dishes and the best Restaurants in Mexico. You will also find many opportunities for fun, and shopping. Let’s go!

Por Siempre Vegana Taqueria $

Por Siempre Vegana Taqueria will not fail you! If you only had one place to check out, this is the one! It is economical and has an extensive variety of vegan food. You will find many dishes here, but I have chosen two of the best.

Vegan Al Pastor Tacos

Al Pastor Tacos

This dish has a very iconic story. In the 1930s, when Lebanese migrants arrived in Mexico, they introduced shawarma, meat cooked on a rotating spit. Later, the children of these Lebanese migrants started creating it themselves but with a Mexican twist, and this Al Pastor Taco was invented. You will find “trompos” or rotating spits everywhere in Mexico City but as a vegan, you don’t need to miss out because Por Siempre Vegana has you covered!

The vegan al pastor is made with vital wheat gluten and marinated for 24 hours in the beautiful adobo sauce. Then it is shaped on the spit, cut, grilled and topped with the iconic juicy pineapple.

The handmade tortillas, guacamole and salsas will take it to the next level.

I highly recommend trying this dish at Por Siempre Vegana Taqueria during your tour to Mexico.

The next vegan recipe is Mexican-Styled Molcajete. It is hot and spicy and a perfect meal for both vegan and meat lovers. The remarkable thing about Molcajete is that it is very economical since it’s large enough to share.

Vegan Molcajete

It is hot and spicy and a perfect meal for both vegan and meat lovers.

Meat is grilled with chiles Serrano, avocado, and onion. Once it is done, grilled meat is placed in the hot molcajete. Then it is topped with salsa grilled onions, Serrano chilies, avocado, and melted cheese. The Molcajete dish is served with hot tortillas to give you a delightful taste.

Fresh Green juice and Sweet Bread

Start your next day with fresh green juice. You can get fresh green juice from any local fruit stand. In my case I was able to pick one up right across from Vegamo in the Roma Norte neighborhood. Enjoy fresh green juice with pan de muerto, a seasonal bread during the day of the dead. But if you’re traveling during a different time then you can always enjoy conchas. Your experience with this sweet and fluffy bread will be fantastic.

Visit Xochimilco

After enjoying fresh green juice, go to Xochimilco, an excellent tourist attraction. It is almost forty minutes away from the city; you can reach there in just about $10.00 USD.

Here you can enjoy the colored boat rides, in the canal. I would recommend at least the 3 hour ride. I know it sounds like a lot but you really do need the time to enjoy your shopping boat side. Food and drink vendors, mariachis and jewelry vendors can be found along the canal while you ride yours so you will want to relax and enjoy all of it! When else can you have a private mariachi group? Each song came out to about $7 a song. I enjoyed the squash blossom (flor de calabaza) crispy tacos without cheese and eating it with sliced nopales was a wonderful experience.

El Moro Vegan Churros!

Vegan Churros at El Moro restaurant will be a nice Mexican treat. Thousands of Churros are made every day at El Moro without eggs or butter. The recipe is only oil, flour, water and vanilla.

Vegan Churros Galore!

Thousands of Churros are made every day at El Moro without eggs or butter.

Crispy, yet soft churros with cinnamon, sugar, and hot chocolate will be a treat you will need to enjoy every day. You can also enjoy the chocolate as well, although the vegan hot chocolate is made with water, you wouldn’t know since it still tastes very creamy!

Mexican Street Food - Gatorta Vegan Tortas

After visiting Mexico City’s “Central Park,” El Bosque de Chapultepec, a famous and beautiful park in Mexico. You will have to refuel at one of Mexico City’s iconic vegan Mexican carts. Gatorta specializes in tortas aka big sandwiches. I got their most popular one “Milanesa” It contains hot dogs, thin meat, avocado, cheese salsa, beans, and grilled onions.  Wrapped in plastic to make it easier to hold but also because it can get messy. #worthit. They also have many other filling options so go ham (vegan style of course 😉)

La Michoacana Paletas

After this hot meal, eating coconut ice cream will be a perfect option. Ice cream is purely made with water and coconut. La michoacana paleta shop is the best spot for this coconut Popsicle creamy ice cream.

Closer to that shop, there is Ciudadella market where you can shop for traditional Mexican handcrafts folk and much more.

La Pitahaya Vegana

Finish your day with a splendid dinner at La Pitahaya restaurant. I will recommend you Pink Tortillas for your dinner. For Pink Tortillas, La Pitahaya restaurant is the best option in Mexico.

La Pitahaya Vegana

Their famous pink tortillas with chickpea chorizo, garbanzo beans, and green salsa are delicious. Walk through streets for shopping or enjoy the colorful night view of Mexican streets.
